What causes a cervical sprain/strain injury?
The impact from a crash, even a relatively low speed crash, results in sudden and severe forces on the muscles, ligaments, discs, and other supporting structure of the cervical spine (neck) and thoracic spine (upper back). When the initial impact occurs, the head is immediately snapped in one direction (typically forward or backward) and then immediately whipped in the opposite direction. This snapping and whipping motion can cause significant internal damage to the spine and its supporting muscles and ligaments.
