What causes a cell phone to have a dropped call?

Cellular phones drop calls for a number of reasons, there is no singular definitive cause for a dropped call.

The most common reason for a dropped call is because one of the parties on the call enters a “dead zone” in his or her cellular service coverage. Dead zones are areas of no or very little signal, certainly too little to support a cellular phone call. Calls are often dropped when either party on a call enters an area of weak cellular coverage. Weak spots in coverage and dead zones are caused by cellular towers not being able to reach the area.

If either party runs out of battery on their cell phone while on a call, the call will be terminated. In rare cases, calls can be dropped as a result of solar flares and solar storms.

If your cellular service provider is overwhelmed with network traffic, calls will also be dropped. This happens often at large conferences, or during times of disaster. A small portion of users using large amount of data through their cell phones can also cause a provider to be overwhelmed by traffic.

Wireless interference can also cause dropped calls. Interference happens when any number of electronic devices try to communicate on the same frequencies as cell phones do. These conflicting signals often cause problems with calls. It is for this reason that making a call indoors where there is often a high number of electronics is not advised.

As a result of pressure by consumers over dropped calls, providers are constantly striving to improve the infrastructure of their network to support a higher volume of calls.

The science of dropped calls. Your call doesn’t go straight through from the person’s phone to your cell phone, it actually goes from tower to tower to tower until it reches your phone. A dropped call will happen during the time one of those towers recieve that signal. If the signal isn’t strong, then it might drop.
