What causes a Backflow?

0

There are principally two types of backflow. One is backpressure and the other is backsiphonage. Backpressure can occur when the pressure of a non-potable source is greater than the potable (drinking) water source. The second type, backsiphonage is caused by a drop in atmospheric pressure on the drinking water side. This type of backflow is unusual but can occur if a vacuum is created when an extremely high demand is placed on the water system such as when fighting a fire.
