What caused the dinosaurs to die out?
There is considerable evidence, discovered by Luis and Walter Alvarez, to suggest that the cause of what is known to science as the “KT extinction event”, in which the dinosaurs were among 75% of Earth’s species to go extinct, was that a massive object collided with the Earth. The evidence suggests that this object hit what is now the western edge of the Gulf of Mexico, causing a long impact winter. There may have been other contributing factors to the extinction (the “Deccan traps” in what is now India are the most famous other factor, and while it might not have caused as much damage, it certainly didn’t help the dinosaurs).
