The Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Marathon is held every year over the Easter bank holiday weekend, as it has been since 1948, although there was no race in 2003 because of the restrictions on movement arising from the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease. The course is 125 miles, from the Devizes Wharf along the Kennet and Avon Canal to Reading, thence along the River Thames to Westminster Bridge. Initially raced between teams of Rover Scouts and Sea Cadets, the race now comprises junior, adult and veteran classes, with teams entered by Scouting companies, schools, the Services and canoe clubs. The governing body for the race is The Devizes to Westminster Organisation Ltd.
