What can you recommend to replace hazing as initiation rite in school-based fraternities?

The problem with fraternities is not the hazing. The problem is the newbies trying and wanting more power. Of course it is very natural for the new members of the fraternity who are having their 1st initiation with the neophytes to give more pain to the neophytes.

Initiations don’t have to be physical. If for the reason that hazing promotes closeness within a fraternity, it’s a lie. Closeness can be attained without physical contact. I was a sorority member in my college days and our initiation was all psychological. One can argue that women are different from men. Yes, that’s true. But we were able to foster closeness without any physical contact. I believe fraternities can do the same. So, how about changing the style of initiation rites from one that inflict physical harm on a person to one that only challenges mental alertness and aptitude? I think this is a lot better than inflicting physical injury and giving pain when none should be.
