Yeah, regrettably this really bad facial flushing is a common adverse effect when using Niaspan, typically in the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia (high triglycerides in the blood). I hate Niaspan with a passion and there’s not a whole lot we can do to avert this crappy reaction. It is dose-dependent to physicians try to keep the dose as low as possible. But frankly, Niaspan has this associated side effect and there’s not much we can do to help. Sometimes it’s helpful to take at bedtime or pre-treat with aspirin or an NSAID (but please have your mother check with the treating physician before doing any of this as it may be an unwise thing to do in her case, I just don’t know enough about her specific clinical situation, contraindications, comorbidities, etc. to make specific recommendations).
