What can we do to help prevent eating disorders and muscle dysmorphia?
Muscle Dysmorphia, Anorexia, and Bulimia are common disorders among teens. As Adolescents struggle, there are things parents can look for and do to help fight off these illnesses. Parents can pay close attention to the eating habits (such as when and how much) of their children. Encourage good eating habits; keep healthy foods in the home. Since most cases of anorexia, bulimia, and muscle dysmorphia are the result of low self-esteem, parents need to praise and encourage their children. If they are too focused on imperfections, point out their good qualities and help them develop them even further. Helping them build a good self-worth and a good self-concept is imperative. Also, keep open lines of communication between the parent and child. Having teens feel comfortable enough to talk about problems and issues they may be facing can be helpful for both parents and children.
