He may be scared or intimidated with the unfamiliar surroundings. However, by the parents sleeping there he is going to get used to it and be scared should they leave. It is not uncommon for a child to want to have their parents with them, anyway. I’m not sure if it would work, but perhaps you could buy the child a toy or a blanket. It sounds like he just wants a security object there.
