“Dexter” season four premiered tonight, and after the jump, I’m going to offer some spoiler-minimal thoughts on why I’m probably not going to be writing as much about the new season as I did in years past, followed (with fair warning) by a few specific thoughts about the premiere itself. All that coming up just as soon as I TiVo Jon Stewart… I’ve seen the first four episodes of this season, and while they’re definitely an improvement over season three, they weren’t enough to shake me of my belief that this isn’t a show that should be having a fourth season. The longer “Dexter” is on, the more diluted the concept feels, and the cuddlier he becomes. Episode one just aired last night: Season 4 premiered Sunday September 27, 2009. John Lithgow has been confirmed to join the cast of Dexter for season 4. Lithgow will play Arthur Mitchell, (Showtime previously referred to this character as Walter Simmons, but have changed the name) an unassuming, mild-mannered suburbanite who has been living a dual life as one of America’s most prolific and deadly serial killers. Dubbed the “Trinity Killer” because of his proclivity to kill in threes, he relocates to Miami after being tracked by retired FBI Special Agent Frank Lundy (Keith Carradine). Brought on to assist in the investigation of Miami’s latest serial killer, Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) becomes increasingly fascinated with “Trinity’s” unique killing methods and his ability to evade capture for almost three decades.
