What can the Seattle School Board do to narrow the achievement gap?

No single initiative will close the achievement gap; I would expect our new superintendent to draw on her substantial skills and experience to develop a plan that includes: • High quality preschool/early-learning opportunities that integrate with kindergarten programming. • Plan to attract, retain and reward highly qualified teachers in higher challenge schools. • Challenging coursework that meets rigorous standards. • High expectations for students to excel in all academic areas. • Extensive use of assessment data for each student, resulting in intervention where needed. • Reduced class size, extended-day/summer program opportunities. • Allocation of budget that is aligned with these priorities and initiatives. • Action plan to address funding adequacy and policy changes needed to achieve these objectives. 2) Can the district make schools safer?
