What can people do to help reduce the threat of catastrophic wildfires?
People living in or near dense forests should create a clear zone around buildings as a defense against catastrophic wildfires. Yards should be cleared of brush and low branches, trees thinned and trimmed, roofs made of fire resistant materials, and reserves of water ensured. Community groups should work with local organizations and civic leaders to help coordinate the resources necessary to create defensible zones around communities, as well as strategically placed zones to protect their homes, old growth forests, and wildlife habitats. Please provide input to District Rangers to develop projects to thin the forest in local areas.
