What can older people do about back pain?
A. Avoid surgery at all costs. If you need an operation, pick the shortest and safest procedure. The time needed for the surgery greatly increases the risk in older people. Older people almost never need a fusion. The risk of fusion is too great. To prevent injury and decrease the need for surgery, begin an exercise program. Exercise will help you develop better balance, faster reflexes, and of course stronger back muscles. Exercise will cut the chance that you will have osteoporosis and improve your alertness. Walking, swimming and using light hand held weights call all be helpful. Many senior centers offer free or low cost exercise classes.
