What can newly hatched killifish eat?
The standard is newly-hatched brine shrimp, but a few killifish species have newborn fry that are too small to eat baby brine shrimp. Microworms are another good first food, and fry that are too small for brine shrimp often can eat microworms. Walter Worms and Banana Worms, which are slightly different types of microworms, are also good. You can feed the fry finely-powdered prepared foods, but some fry will not eat them. Frozen rotifers or cyclops, and also Cyclop-Eze, are also options. Another possibility for very small fry is egg yolk infusion– shake a hard-boiled egg yolk with water until it forms a suspension, and then give it a few drops at a time to the fry. Another old standby is “green water,” which is (more or less) water from an old fish tank that is murky-green because it has so many tiny organisms in it.
