What can my son/daughter do to improve their professional development opportunities and work-related skills?
It is important for your son/daughter to gain relevant experience and develop career skills during their college years. This can be done by taking a leadership position in a campus organization, joining a professional organization, and increasing their responsibilities at their internships. Hopefully your son/daughter is interested in the field they plan to go into and these activities would be “fun” for them. You can encourage your son or daughter to pursue opportunities outside the classroom, talk to faculty, get involved in local chapters of professional/trade organizations, attend industry gatherings, and use their part-time job to develop career skills. Students interested in doing a supervised internship during the junior or senior year should consult The Internship Program section of the Career Services webpage for more information. Internship positions are also posted on Career Link.
