What can make a bicycle chain snap?
I’m not sure if you’re talking about chain breakage, or just derailling from a ss setup. If the chain broke, 99% of the time it’s because a rivet pulled out of the plates due to improper assembly (i.e. one end of the rivet isn’t poking out quite far enough and gets pulled through/worked out while pedaling). Rust can cause failures, too, and sometimes on an old or restored chain the inner rust in the roller that you can’t see can eat away at the rivets, etc. The chain doesn’t have to be worn out for this to happen….the rust just has to have gotten bad and let go for too long. Most of the time it’s a rivet assembly problem, though. If it’s just derailling, then the first thing I’d check is your chainline. If the gears are more than 2 or 3 millimeters out of line, it gets challenging to make the system work. Re-spacing of the chainring, rear cog, and/or hub body on the axle can take care of this. Also, using a 3/32″ chain on 1/8″ gears can complicate any alignment issues. Also also, che
