What can I visit off the beaten track in Bamako (Mali) in January 2008?
The streets of Bamako are basically markets — just about everything is sold on the street — but you can also go to the Pink Market, the Fetish Market, Artisan Market, and the Small Market. The Fetish Market has all the items needed for traditional medicine and charms. The Niger River is otherwise a main part of the city and you could travel along the river to get a glimpse of village life outside Bamako. There are also caves outside the city where people have lived for centuries (near point G in direction of the zoo). The road offers nice views of Bamako. The National Institute of the Arts will often have well-known Malian musicians, local dances, or public exhibits.
