What can I expect once I’ve referred a student to the District Attorney’s Office?

The student’s referral packet will be reviewed by the Truancy Prosecution Specialist, and with assistance from the Deputy District Attorney Juvenile Prosecutor, the SARB office will determine if charges should be filed. If charges are filed in the form of an infraction or misdemeanor, the Truancy Prosecution Specialist will keep the school updated by phone or mail as progress is made. Please be patient, as this can be a lengthy process. In many scenarios, the student’s attendance is not severe enough to warrant prosecution at the time. In that case, the Truancy Prosecution Specialist will send out a warning letter from the District Attorney, advising the student and/or family that they have been referred for possible legal action and that the District Attorney’s office will be monitoring their attendance. The Truancy Prosecution Specialist will then continue to monitor the student’s attendance on a monthly basis, following up with possible prosecution if the attendance declines or does
