What can I expect in an Ashtanga Yoga class?
Each class begins with a Sanskrit invocation. It is done in a call and response manner. It is basically giving thanks for the teachers who have brought us this knowledge. If students are not comfortable saying this invocation they just remain respectfully silent. The class is then led through ten sun salutations and the standing sequence of postures and then to the floor for the seated postures, finishing sequence and deep relaxation. Tea is served after class as students visit and talk with the teacher. In Beginners Series the same invocation is said and sequential work on the postures is begun. In each class students are led through what they learned previously and then new postures are demonstrated, options given for the posture and students practice at their level. Each of these classes ends with deep relaxation and tea.
