What can i do to improve clay soil for veg next year?
We have clay here in Northern Indiana and you described it correctly. You have to add something to it to make it more workable and fertile. When you see a tree trimming service as them what they are doing with the limbs etc that they are shredding. They usually have to travel quite a distance to drop them off. They are glad to drop a truck load or more on your drive way or next to your garden. Use it 3 to 4″ thick around your plants. It keeps down the weeds and conserves moisture. Make sure you use a high nitrogen fertilizer and the chips will compost fairly fast. Land for land fills is really expensive. The people hauling trash try to save every inch of space they can for trash. Our garbage removal system in conjunction with local county government has developed composting sites for compost able materials. Ours uses those fallen logs and limbs and yard grasses in some areas.
