What can I do about OutOfMemory errors?
Color depth is the main culprit eating up memory in VASSAL. It doesn’t matter what the image compression level is. You don’t get savings unless you use a reduced color palette. Using the same palette for all your images will help as well. You can also get a benefit from reducing the number of colors used in your Display settings. For some reason a large image takes up more space than several smaller images, so you can break up large map images into smaller pieces. You can reassemble them as Boards using the default Board layout, so players need never know that the map’s been broken up.
