What can i add to the water my outdoor fountain to get rid of bees?

I have an outdoor fountain and it is covered with bees every afternoon until dark. As far as I know there is not a hive nearby and I was wondering if there is something I can add to the water in the fountain to repel them. I actually spread Vicks Vaporub on the edges of the fountain and it worked for a short time but the sun and water washed it away. My grandson is allergic to bee stings and I need to fix this problem ASAP. Please help if you can.
