What can food stamps purchase?
The Food Stamp program provides eligible individuals with an electronic benefit card (EBT). This card is valid at most grocery stores, warehouse clubs, farmer’s markets and convenience stores. Most foods are eligible for purchase with an EBT card.Non-Nutritious FoodsThe Food Stamp program has received criticism because it allows the purchase of unhealthy food items including candy and soda pop. Participants can use their benefits to purchase gum, birthday cakes, ice cream and other non-nutritious foods.Prepared FoodsFood stamps can be used to buy cold sandwiches, submarines or salads if you plan on eating them at home. They cannot be used to buy hot ready-to-eat food.Gardening Seeds and PlantsFood stamps can be used to purchase seeds and plants that will produce food. Trees that produce fruit and nuts are also food stamp eligible.Special ProgramsFood stamps can be used to purchase meals from programs such as Meals on Wheels. They can also be used in dining areas such as soup kitchens.
