What can Europe do to become a stronger partner for the US in overcoming international conflicts?
If we succeed, at some point the EU will cross the threshold to sovereignty. The Federal Constitutional Court made such a development difficult with its latest ruling on the Lisbon Treaty, and in France, the United Kingdom and other countries there are reservations as well. But our future lies in a Europe that is more strongly united politically, even if it’s not always what we would like to hear. Such a united Europe would be a natural partner for the United States. Of course we wouldn’t have the same military capabilities as the United States – that’s not necessary – but Europe would be a political equal. At the moment, this is not the case, though Europe is still the strongest economic region in the world. The greatest danger Europe faces is reverting to nationalist tendencies.
