What can be the cause of numbness in fingers?

Sounds like carpal tunnel or cub-ital tunnel. I’ve had both and the difference is with carpal you will have numbness or tingling in the thumb or index finger or both. With cub-ital tunnel the numbness is in the ring finger and/or the “pinkie” finger. Your boyfriend could try a brace which may help somewhat, mostly when he sleeps, the pain is sometimes worse when you are sleeping especially if he sleeps with his hand bent, say under his pillow. Carpal tunnel is in the wrist and cub-ital tunnel is in the elbow. Sometimes a cortisone shot will help, but usually surgery is what helps the most and it usually is covered under workmen’s compensation. Good luck to you both.
