Yeltsin was, for a while there, like the ’energizer bunny.’ He just kept on going, and going, and going. I wrote a paper about him in college…. I thought he was a goner a couple of times. If I remember correctly he was born in one of those obscure Russian towns. He became a moderately big-yukkedy-yuk in the Russian government–kind of like a mayer to Russia. Then Gorby [Mikhail Gorbachev] put him in some committee in the 1980’s and next put him in a higher position within the Moscow City Committee [or was it commission?]. But then he committed political suicide by criticizing Gorby in public and he was voted out of the committee with Gorby’s blessing. Should be the end of Yeltsin, right? No, then he gets ELECTED to the Russian Parliament and starts chanting about Russian political corruption. This made him popular with the people.
