What can be done to stem the tide of abandoned and abused animals?
Although I am former President of the Cape Breton Branch of the SPCA, I never get used to viewing animal cruelty. Animal abuse is a form of violence that is linked to child and spousal abuse. We need to educate the public about this problem and how we all share a role in preventing it, from reporting cases of abuse, to educating pet owners to spay and neutering our animals, there are many ways of dealing with abuse. The justice system has to stop viewing animals as property and recognize that when abused, they suffer just as we would.As an art educator, I teach a humane education unit to my students,that I link to children’s rights education.In the CBRM, council has taken a humane approach to cat overpopulation by setting up a fund with the SPCA to help low income people spay/neuter cats.If that is not an option for people they should turn their pets into an animal shelter.There is no excuse for leaving them in a cardboard box!
