What can be done to restore kokanee at Granby?
Very little can be done to prevent mysis competition with kokanee- mysis can not be completely removed from the lake and we can’t control the climate and the ensuing dam operations. We do have the ability to control lake trout predation by keeping their numbers and size structure in balance with the prey supply. Harvest regulations are one of the fish manager’s most powerful tools to control this. One way to help kokanee would be to protect small (<20 inches) lake trout from harvest because they are the only game species that eats mysis, and allow anglers to harvest larger lake trout (that eat kokanee) to reduce lake trout predation pressure on kokanee. Again, the point is to keep predators in balance with their prey supply.
