What can be done to REDUCE THE DAMAGE caused by acid rain?
You have picked one of if not the only environmental problem that seems to have a solution already working. Maybe not perfectly but measurable progress is being made. A cap and trade program is reducing the amount of industrial compounds (especially sulfur compounds that cause acid rain) produced. Each producer has a set limit on how much acid producing waste in any form it can release into the atmosphere. Above that amount and they have to pay penalties. But if they stay beneath that amount they are allowed to trade- sell- the difference between what they produce and the amount they are allowed to produce. Highly efficient plants (most are coal fired generating plants but many other Industries also produce sulfur). stay well beneath the limit and make a lot of money trading their quota. THis gives older plants a good reason to upgrade their plants, buying the quotas is losing their profits. For some plants the cost of upgrading is simply prohibitive but most plants can save money by u
