What can be done to lower the cost of higher education?
“Higher education is the path to people having a reasonable chance of getting ahead. And that’s what the American dream has been all about. And here, we want everyone to have a reasonable chance of getting ahead in life. Education is central. College education, the price has been moving up dramatically. And frankly, we just passed legislation last year, it was signed by the President, that would reduce the interest rate on student loans, that is going to be some help. We have also just recently increased the amount that’s available through Pell grants for low income students. It’s that kind of step…we need to do more and more of those steps as we go forward because we have got to have young people getting the kind of technical training and getting the kind of education they want. One advantage in Maine has been the switch to community colleges.
