What can be done to curb government spending, reduce the national debt and increase gross domestic product?
The most important goal is to promote economic growth. In fact, the best way to increase revenue coming into the government is not to raise taxes, but to grow the economy. Lower taxes and sensible, modern regulations can help the economy grow. It would be a huge mistake, especially in light of our economic problems, to burden the productive, job-creating sector of the economy with more taxes and excessive regulations. In addition, there must be restraint on spending. I favor a balanced-budget amendment and a sunset law that requires every federal program to be examined and reauthorized. Clearly, there must be priorities. I believe that the first function of the federal government is to defend the country, and that should be our highest priority.
