What Can Be Done to Correct Scheuermanns Disease?
Most cases of Scheuermann’s disease are treated conservatively and respond well. The doctor will observe and record any changes by doing follow-up exams and x-rays. After the initial diagnosis, the doctor will probably recommend exercises to strengthen the back muscles and keep the curve as flexible as possible. Stretching and aerobic exercises are prescribed by many doctors and are best done through physical therapy. If the disease continues to worsen, many doctors will order a back brace to be worn between 16 and 24 hours a day, depending on how severe the kyphosis is. The back brace is not a choice most teenagers are comfortable with, so physical therapy and exercise should always be done first. Spinal fusion surgery is also performed if the kyphosis worsens or it causes neurological or breathing problems.
