Most toilet backups are caused by items that have been discarded into the fixture. Items such as adult disposal undergarments, handi-wipes, thick absorbent toilet tissue, paper towels, facial tissues, etc. can lead to a stoppage. Especially with low-flow toilets, caution should be exercised on disposal habits. With toilet backup, try unstopping the toilet with a plunger. Center the rubber portion of the plunger over toilet drain and push. Several plunges may be required to clear the drain. Use towels to soak up any overflow, since any overflow may damage the manor below. A toilet overflow may result from a mainline blockage. Backup in a shower or tub may be an indicator or a mainline blockage.
