Generally speaking, the man-o-war arrives on Texas’ beaches, in greatest abundance, during the spring and early summer. Strong, prevailing southeasterly winds usually blow lots of Sargassum seaweed and man-o-war onto the beach. There is really nothing that can be done about it other than educate your children and beachgoers around you about the hazards of touching stranded man-o-war (dead, deflated man-o-war can still pack a heck of a sting) or being in the water while the man-o-war are washing ashore. As far as cleaning/ maintaining the beach, Matagorda County Commissioners and residents are responsible for beach maintenance activities. Maybe you would like to contact our County Commissioner and inform him of the risks involved with both the man-o-war and perhaps even discuss the signage warning folks about the strong current.
