What can be done about my neighbour playing loud music?
The police can raise the matter in terms of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982. If their request to turn the music down is ignored, they may confiscate the offending equipment The Act also covers annoyance caused by TV’s, radios, hi-fi’s, musical instruments, singing etc. For more information on this please contact your local police office. The Anti-Social Behaviour (Scotland) Act 2004 gives local authorities similar powers to deal with noise and, in particular, to tackle problems of night time noise in domestic dwellings. The Council has set up a Noise Nuisance Team who can use these new powers, to issue fixed penalty notices and where necessary seize noise producing equipment. These powers only relate to night time noise from domestic premises. If loud music occurs during the day you should contact your local police office on 0300 111 2222.
