If they are a threat or nuisance then the Ministry advises you are allowed to shoot them! Local trappers will not be bothered and hiring someone can be expensive. You can protect trees by wrapping chicken wire around around the trunk but leave room for the tree to grow, else the wire may become embedded in the bark. You can spray pepper sauce etc. but these deterrents may not last long with the weather.
