It sounds like your husband might have developed a case of erythematous candidiasis. It’s similar to thrush (yeast infection in the mouth, known as cadida albicans), minus the white patches. It’s very common for a person with a depressed immune system (from the radiation treatment) to develop this. See your doctor for an anti-fungal medication. Until then, brush the teeth with a soft toothbrush and a mild toothpaste after every meal, and follow up with gargling with a very mild mouthwash. Some have gotten temporary pain relief from gargling with a baking soda, peroxide and water solution. But, it’s important to keep good oral hygiene. Avoid hot foods and food that contains citric acid.
