Wet food naturally helps to prevent urinary tract disease such as stones and crystals, as well as helping to prevent cats from becoming obese. Dry food typically contains too many carbs for cats, which can lead to weight gain and even diabetes. Dry food is dehydrated. Cats in the wild consume prey, from which they acquire meat protein and moisture. Cats that eat only dry food are at risk of urinary tract disease, diabetes, obesity, and eventually, even kidney failure. Lack of adequate moisture, high grain/carb and low meat protein/moisture are the reasons for this. Having said that, there are some good quality dry foods that are grain-free (although that does not address the moisture issue, so you must ensure that your cats drink enough water. The only grain-free dry food that my cats will eat is B.G. (Before Grain, by Merrick).
