Construction would provide a significant economic boost to the local district, with around half of the plant cost spent in New Zealand, including the Waitaki district. The project would bring more people into the district, helping to reverse a trend of decreasing population in the Waitaki district. Construction force salaries alone would total more than $20 million over the two year construction period with locals given every opportunity to gain employment. Local accommodation providers would benefit from a significant lift in occupancy for workers who move to the area for the duration of the project.
