Davis was an active participant in no Civil War Battles. He was a West Point graduate and a former army officer, and one of the legitimate heroes of the Mexican War. Davis often dreamed of getting away from the political squabbling in Richmond and taking the field to lead one of the Confederacy’s armies. The western army might have been better off if he had done so, but he was never able to get away. When the First Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) was imminent Davis could not contain his excitement and ordered up a special train to carry him north from Richmond to the battlefield, but he arrived after the day’s fighting was done.
