What basic art supplies do i need to begin painting with oil paints? ?
You need something to paint on. You can use canvas or wood- either have to be prepped with gesso. You can stretch and prep your own canvas to save money or buy already prepped canvases. If you are trying to save money, you can also gesso over old paintings you buy at Goodwill. You need brushes. Don’t buy extremely cheap brushes; hairs will fall off in the painting. I would get a med/large brush and one smaller brush. I would get flat brushes before the round brushes. Eventually you will need more but you need at least 2 to start. As far as paint, you might find it easiest to buy the “starter” kit that has the most popular colors and white. That should give you enough to mix most anything you need to start. Most contain linseed oil and turpentine. You need a pallet. The easiest is the throw away paper pallets. The cheapest is to “borrow” trays from you college caffeteria- but i never did that.
