The FE-120 uses iESP (Intelligent Electro Selective Pattern) auto focus. In this mode, the camera determines what subject to give focus. It analyzes the entire image and detects the area of greatest contrast (generally, this will be the border where your subject meets the background) and focuses on that area. For this reason, focusing is possible even when the subject is not in the center of the frame.
