Arundel Castle suffered a number of sieges during the English Civil War. On 17th December 1642 Sir William Waller, the Parliamentary general attacked and took the Castle, which was held by a small garrison of around 100 men. By December 1643 the Royalists were on a counteroffensive and the Royalist general Lord Hopton besieged Arundel from 2nd to 9th December 1643, which was then surrendered by its small garrison of 80 men. Subsequently Waller destroyed a detatchment of the Royalist army at Alton and had the upper hand again. This allowed him to besiege Arundel again from 19th December to 6th January 1644. Waller had approximately 4500 men including 3600 foot soldiers (armed with pikes and matchlock muskets), 900 cavalry with 4 artillery pieces. The Royalist defenders, led by Colonel Bamfield, had upto 1100 men and tried to hold the town against Waller’s force but were defeated and retreated to the castle.
