What assistance is DFID providing to the people of Afghanistan in response to the recent crisis?
Since 11 September, in response to the current crisis, DFID has announced an additional provision of 40 million for immediate assistance. In line with the objectives of the international community, DFID s top priorities are to: help meet immediate life-saving needs (food, water, healthcare, shelter) within Afghanistan, as best as possible and for as long as possible, through the national staff of relevant agencies; support refugee needs in neighbouring countries; help host populations through programmes which benefit them; and strengthen international humanitarian agency capacity and co-ordination. Funds are being channelled through UN agencies, the Red Cross and NGOs. As well as financial assistance, DFID is providing technical personnel, logistical, material and other practical support.
