What Aspects of Cuban History Made the Island a Particularly Fertile Ground for Fidel Castros Revolutionary Movement?
EZLN is confronted with increased economic globalization, which it argues represses its constituents even further. Perhaps the greatest concern to the EZLN is the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). NAFTA seeks to lower economic trade barriers between Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Under the agreement, Mexico will be able to supply its neighbors with the cheap labor they need to make effective use of capital. The United States and Canada, however, are in the position to capitalize much of the Mexican economy. From the EZLN point of view, the Mexican government under Zedillo and the PRI sold Mexican society and the Mexican people to countries such as the United States and Canada in exchange for badly needed capital.
