What areas of research are emphasized?
The faculty of the Department of Epidemiology maintains a large research program covering many areas of human disease including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, injuries, infectious diseases (HIV/AIDS and other STDs), maternal and child health, neurological diseases, and musculoskeletal conditions. In addition, clinical, nutritional, genetic, metabolic, molecular, gender, environmental, pharmacological, psychological, behavioral, and socio-economic factors associated with disease and disease outcome are under study. The great majority of the research is oriented towards elucidating disease etiology (causation) through studies grounded in the biological sciences. The faculty’s research is highly interdisciplinary and often is conducted in collaboration with outside institutions, as well as with many departments within the University.
