What areas of cancer research need more support?
To continue to make progress in understanding how cancer is caused, research funding is needed in all areas of research and for all different types of cancer. It has been generally accepted that more investment is needed to support research aimed at finding ways to prevent cancer. The Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow Project has a strong focus on prevention. This project is the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer’s largest project. Another key area where need has been identified is translational research. This is defined as research that puts discoveries into action. The Partnership is working closely with the Terry Fox Research Institute to support and strengthen Canada’s capacity to do translational research. Experts agree that in order to have a strong impact on the total number of Canadians affected by cancer, more research money is needed to support lung and colorectal cancer research. These are the leading causes of cancer death in Canada.
