What are you doing to address the rising number of violent assaults in schools?

The Department takes very seriously the issue of violence in schools. We expect LEAs and schools to take action to deal with all cases of violence against school staff and pupils. We are determined to strengthen the hand of schools and LEAs in dealing with violent behaviour by pupils and others against fellow pupils and teachers. We plan to extend the use of Parenting Orders so that these can be applied to the parents of pupils excluded from school for offences such as violent assault, as a means of reminding the parents of their responsibilities for the child’s behaviour in school. We recently made available to schools A Legal Toolkit for Schools (www.teachernet.gov.uk/safeschools ) which is a new guidance document on the legal remedies available to schools and LEAs when faced with problems of violent or potentially violent parents and other adults on school premises.
