What are winter fuel payments?
A winter fuel payment is an annual payment made by Central Government to help people aged 60 and over with their winter heating bills. The amount payable changes each year and is dependant on your individual circumstances. The Government also sets a “qualifying week”, the dates of which change each year, to allow enough time to process all new claims. The full amounts for the winter 2008/2009 are yet to be announced but it has been confirmed that this year there will be an additional payment of £50 for households aged between 60 and 79 and an additional payment of £100 for someone aged 80 or over.
