What are we remembering on Remembrance Day?
This unit usually takes place in the autumn term, in order to coincide with significant events. It examines what things we remember as special, and why we remember them. It incorporates a visit to the local epitaph and a visit from an older resident in the village, and children discuss the significance of Remembrance Day. Children plan a class assembly for the school about Remembrance Day, investigating the content through discussion, sharing with families and first-hand observation. This is extended to the examination of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance, and moves to other symbols that have important meanings. Other things we remember or commemorate are explored. Bonfire night is investigated and the symbolism of fireworks and bonfires is discussed. This unit links well with units in art and in RE.
